Why are aortic and arterial-line pressures different?

The peripheral pulse is slightly delayed and amplified.

Overview

Ao is the central aortic tracing. ART represents a peripheral arterial pulse with a short transit delay, modestly higher systolic pulse amplitude and a slightly different contour. Mean pressure stays approximately equal; diastolic pressure changes less than systolic pressure.

This is an illustrative transfer, not a patient-specific radial-to-aortic conversion. Amplification varies with site, age, stiffness and wave reflections. Continuous-flow support retains its low pulsatility; the transform does not create pulses without native pulsation.

Overdamping and underdamping are applied to the peripheral recording after pulse propagation. They do not alter the underlying central circulation. The AHA arterial-stiffness statement is listed in Works cited.
