Overview
Volume Control targets VT with constant inspiratory flow. Pressure Control sets pressure above PEEP and lets volume change. PCV-VG solves the settled pressure needed for the volume target, up to a 35 cmH₂O driving-pressure ceiling. SIMV combines mandatory volume-controlled and pressure-supported breaths; NIPPV uses pressure support.
Adjust rate, VT or pressure, inspiratory time, pressure support, FiO₂ and PEEP. Short expiration and increased airway resistance leave trapped volume and intrinsic PEEP. Lung congestion changes assumed compliance. Elastic inflation and PEEP affect venous return, RV load and LV unloading; resistive PIP is not treated as pleural pressure.
The compact summary shows delivered VT, minute ventilation, PIP/plateau, external/intrinsic PEEP, mean airway pressure and estimated P/F. Hover over values for units and assumptions. Hover or touch pressure, flow and volume traces for point-specific explanations; Pause freezes the same shared clock.
P/F uses estimated PaO₂ divided by FiO₂, never SpO₂. The adult sea-level gas model assumes Hb 15 g/dL, CO₂ production 200 mL/min and fixed dissociation characteristics. P/F is withheld for congenital shunts and mechanical support. Lung mechanics and recruitment are illustrative; sedation affects respiratory drive, but mask leaks, patient-specific muscle effort and patient–ventilator asynchrony are not simulated.
SIMV gas exchange sums useful ventilation breath by breath after subtracting dead space. A tiny assisted breath can contribute no fresh alveolar gas; it cannot cancel a larger mandatory breath. The flow trace and CO₂ estimate use the same delivered volumes.
Hypercapnia and global alveolar hypoxia can raise pulmonary vascular load, with greater output loss in RV failure or pulmonary vascular disease. Supplemental oxygen does not correct CO₂ retention. Live and paused traces share the same passive supported-breath pressure model; actual pleural pressure also depends on chest-wall mechanics and patient effort.
Close the panel to restore the compact monitor. Closing does not disconnect ventilation; choose Room Air or Nasal Oxygen to stop applying ventilator settings. Sources and limitations are in Works cited.
